What Exhaust Cat-back is referring to is the specific port of the exhaust system that spans from the back of the catalytic converter to the final Exhaust Tip. A cat-back exhaust system commonly includes (A) the pipe that spans from the outlet of the converter to the muffler, (B) An Exhaust Pipe in-line "straight through" resonator, (C) the muffler itself, (D) the final length of pipe that exhausts to open air, (E) and sometimes a larger diameter exhaust tip on the end of the final length of pipe...


Aftermarket cat-back Exhaust Systems improved throttle response, improved horsepower, improved torque, improved gas mileage, etc.. by slightly increasing the diameter of the exhaust piping which in turn also increases the average cross-sectional path that the exhaust gases can pass through - with a minimal decrease in velocity. In addition to slightly increasing the exhaust pipe diameter, a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust system will utilize mandrel bent instead of force bent exhaust piping. Mandrel bending of the slightly increased diameter piping keeps the cat-back exhaust systems pipe at a constant cross-sectional area throughout each bend which allows the exhaust gases to flow easier, resulting in less back pressure.

Since less horsepower is waisted on pushing exhaust gasses against backpressure, the result is more horsepower and torque available at the flywheel! An added benefit of reducing horsepower loss against backpressure is that fuel mileage will also increase. Fuel mileage increase is especially noticable at highway speeds and can often be noticed during city driving.
